Are Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore Friends?

“I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad / Carry you around when your arthritis is bad / All I wanna do is grow old with you.”

Sandler’s iconic song to Barrymore in The Wedding Singer, struck a chord with the audience. From this point their on-screen relationship was on-course to be one of Hollywood’s most memorable film couples. Do they have a friendship in real life?

Iconic On-Screen Friendships

Since the very early days of Hollywood, on-screen couples have been capturing the hearts of their audience. Some of these couples have achieved iconic status. It is that chemistry and friendship that drives the actors to work together again and again. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are amongst some of Hollywood’s best pairings like Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, to name a few.

Sandler and Barrymore have worked together since the late 90s, playing on-screen love interests in The Wedding Singer (1998), 50 First Dates (2004), and Blended (2014). Working together across three decades, what is it that keeps drawing these actors together?

The Start of a Working Relationship

A rom-com favorite, The Wedding Singer, brought together Sandler and Barrymore.

While Barrymore had been acting since childhood, working with Sandler was not a straightforward arrangement. According to Drew Barrymore’s book Wildflower, she had to “beg, borrow and steal” to arrange a meeting.

That first meeting demonstrated what an unconventional pairing they were. Barrymore reportedly wore a leopard printed coat, and her dyed purple hair stood out against Sandler’s regular cargo pants. Despite their differences in appearance, Barrymore’s dream to work with Sandler turned out to be a successful move.

Frank Coraci, the director of The Wedding Singer, said that he saw their chemistry immediately. “There were so many moments to it, but the fact that they bonded like friends is what made you believe…that [Robbie and Julia] falling in love is legitimate,” Coraci says.

While only the first film that they worked on together, The Wedding Singer appeared to be the beginning of a long friendship for Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

Their Relationship Today

Twenty-two years after The Wedding Singer, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have remained close friends.

They have been frequently asked about when they will next be working together. During an interview with Andy Cohen, Barrymore said that she and Sandler “text all the time,” discussing what will be their next project.

The sentiment is just as strong from Sandler, and he has a lot of respect for Barrymore and her work. “She’s cool [and] solid as rock, just like she is in real life.”

Earlier this year, Sandler was presented with the best actor honor at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala. The strong friendship between the two actors made Barrymore the obvious choice for presenting this award.

During this honor, Barrymore shared with the audience some of her sentiments for her friend, Sandler.

This moment, honestly, couldn’t be more deserved. I know that everyone is rooting for you because you have earned everyone’s respect. You deserve the best; you give the best and you are the best. I love you very much.

Yes, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are friends. In fact, they have remained friends since their initial meeting back in the 90s.

Since that point, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore’s career has flourished. Amongst their successes, they have continued to keep a close connection and a solid friendship. While The Wedding Singer is what brought the two actors together, the friends have continued to star alongside each other and offer support off-screen.
