It is no secret that Texas pride runs deep among its residents. Between the state once being its own country, having its own pledge, and the famous phrase “Don’t Mess with Texas”, it appears Texans identify with their state more than the average American. Award winning actor Matthew McConaughey has shared his love for this state as well, but why?

Born and Raised

Matthew McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas in 1969, and later moved to Longview, Texas in 1980 before attending the University of Texas in Austin. McConaughey makes it very apparent he is from Texas the minute he opens his mouth, and you hear that southern drawl.

Being a native Texan is something to brag about, and it is a title not to be taken lightly. Native Texan’s find their identity in being from Texas and honor where they came from, giving some explanation to why McConaughey likes his home state.

Alright Alright Alright

Another tie McConaughey has to Texas is in relation to his breakout role in Dazed and Confused. Taking place in Austin, Texas, the film follows a group of teenagers on their last day of high school, and we meet McConaughey as their older friend. Not only was his first movie shot in Texas, but over a dozen of his other films have been as well.

A Strong Connection to Texas

McConaughey returned to Texas to become a professor of the same program he was once a part of at the University of Texas (“UT”). Before his permanent position, he had mentored students and guest taught classes. In 2019, his title was upgraded from professor to Minister of Culture, which is predicted to entail supporting the sports teams and being a representative of the university.

To add to his connection to Texas, McConaughey married his wife Camila Alves in Austin, Texas where they currently reside. We’ve seen McConaughey on the sidelines of UT football games supporting his alma-mater, but he also is a minority owner in an Austin soccor team, Austin FC.

Many of the actor’s major life moments have taken place in Texas. Not only was he born and raised there, but he also went on to attend and graduate from the University of Texas. His movie career began there, and he has filmed there many times since Dazed and Confused. McConaughey has even returned to Texas to work for the university he once attended.

He has said,

there is a certain honor of being a Texan that is a measure of doing something the best that you can.

He believes there is an independence in Texas, and lives there for a simple reason; because he wants to.

Conclusion

Not only is much of McConaughey’s past connected to Texas, but his future is as well. He has spent much of his life in Texas, specifically Austin, and like many Texans has a deep pride for the state. Between his history in Texas, as well as new ventures with the university and a soccer team, there is plenty of reason for him to like the lone star state.
