Zendaya Coleman carries the full package as an actress, singer, dancer, and model. Appearing in a variety of shows and movies, her career took flight at an incredibly early age as she starred in various Disney Channel series. Many of her shows and movies feature singing roles, which raises the question, does Zendaya actually sing?
Born into the entertainment business, Zendaya’s mother was the manager for the Shakespeare Theatre in Orinda, California. This gave Zendaya the opportunity to develop her singing and acting skills as a young child, performing in many of the theatre’s plays.
Zendaya received her big break as an entertainer when she starred as one of the leads on the Disney Channel series, Shake it Up. She was only 14 at the time, the show running from 2010-2013. She sang and danced in the show along with her co-star, Bella Thorne. This marked one of her first major roles as both an actor and singer.
Early Career in Music
In 2011, Zendaya released several singles, including “Swag it Out” and “Watch Me”, the latter collaborated with Bella Thorne.
2013 was a big year for Zendaya: aside from her flourishing acting career, she released her debut album, “Zendaya”, featuring the hit song “Replay”. This marked a huge turning point in her music career, truly defining herself as professional singer.
Musical Acting Roles
It seems there is no limit to Zendaya’s entertainment capabilities. In 2017, she starred in the popular movie The Greatest Showman alongside Zac Efron as the trapeze performer, Anne Wheeler. This performance truly demonstrated her development as an actress and vocalist. Alongside acting and singing for the part, this versatile actress even performed many of her own stunts!
Zendaya continues to incorporate music into her acting roles, including her new show Euphoria. This seems to fulfill both her love for music and acting as she states, “I still love making music, and I still get to do it through acting a lot of times, and being able to work on the finale song for Euphoria was fun.”
Despite not releasing any more music since her 2016 single “Something New,” Zendaya revealed that she is happy to continue exploring her passion for music through acting. She feels that this gives her the best of both worlds, explaining,
There’s a layer of personal life that I think actors get that music artists don’t.
She admits that the music industry takes away an artist’s passion through binding contracts.
Yes, Zendaya does sing. She has demonstrated her singing talent through both acting and independently releasing her music. Her music career has flourished through her acting foundation, and fans can be sure that she will not be stopping any time soon.
Despite the likelihood that she will continue to pursue music, her career focus will always be acting.
