In one of many interviews, Adam Sandler was asked to comment on what he attributes his success to. “I don’t know what drives me to succeed,” he answered. “I know I want to always do the best I can. But school, I certainly wasn’t the best at that.”
Young Adam knew very well that education was important. However, his time in school was a very challenging part of his life.
Adam Sandler has always been a comedic guy. Throughout school, he was seen as the class clown. Although he did not enjoy learning, he did enjoy making his classmates laugh. Being the center of attention in class fueled his jokes.
Unfortunately, Adam was often disciplined in school for his comedic antics, but it did not stop him from doing what he loved.
Adam Sandler was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire. He spent his childhood here attending school and went to Manchester Central High School. During his high school time, he was also in a Jewish youth group.
Adam has always been public about his dislike for school. In fact, much of his comedy after graduating consisted of jokes about school and his time there. Adam’s grades were not always the best. It seemed that the only thing that held his attention in class was thinking about the next prank or joke he could play.
Although his interest in school was slim, Adam did go to college. After graduating high school, he took classes at Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute in New York City. Adam attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University as well. He successfully graduated in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in acting.
Attending college gave Adam Sandler the opportunity to choose what he wanted to learn and do. He knew through high school that he wanted to get into theater and pushed through his education until he was finally able to get there.
Adam Sandler’s brother contributed to his choice in wanting to pursue a career in show business. His brother was the main person in his life to recognize his talent and encouraged him to perform stand-up comedy which further fueled his choice in college.
In fact, Adam’s acting career picked up extremely fast. He was not even out of college yet when he got a role on a big TV sitcom, the Cosby Show. This was only the start for Adam. Soon after this role, he started picking up even more roles.
Yes, Adam Sandler did in fact go to college despite generally not enjoying school. Unlike high school and earlier education, Adam finally got the opportunity to choose what he wanted to learn. Understandably, he chose to go to college for something he had a passion for, show business. This big step in his education led Adam to the successful career he has today as one of the most popular comedians and actors in Hollywood.
